Girl files suit over hockey

A Brookfield Central High School student has sued the Elmbrook School District for refusing to participate in a cooperative with another school district to offer girls ice hockey even though it is in a similar cooperative for boys ice hockey.
The suit, filed by Morgan Hollowell and her father, James, contends the district's actions discriminate against Morgan based on her gender.
The district's "decision to obstruct girls' participation in a sport offered to boys is unlawful because it denies Morgan and other girls an opportunity extended to boys, it reflects discriminatory decision-making, and, in light of the fact that participation in the girls ice hockey team would impose no costs or burden, it is otherwise arbitrary and irrational," says the complaint, which was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Milwaukee.
Elmbrook Superintendent Matt Gibson did not comment on the lawsuit but said the district made the decision to not participate in a girls ice hockey cooperative overseen by the Kettle Moraine School District because only a small number of Brookfield students were interested.
"In our view, it was a difficult program to supervise because there were so many districts involved," Gibson said.
The district decided to try to work to build interest among female students at East and Central high schools so the district could offer its own team, he said.
