Ahh, volleyball season is ending, basketball season is here, hockey is in full swing, and your daughter has nothing to do. Well guess again. We have the solution for you. You can be a leader in supporting women's amateur and professional sports. Change happens one person at a time, one action at a time. You can make a difference by doing the following:
Youth and Middle School
Have your daughter pick her favorite women's team and follow them with her throughout the season. Check out the team's web site regularly. (No excuses about women's games not being shown on TV). It's never to late to get her involved in a sports career. Why not be a ball girl?
Click on to these local sport sites to follow your favorite team, check out schedules, or get involved and sign up for dance or gymnastics:
Panthers: University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee
Golden Eagles: Marquette University
Badgers: University of Wisconsin – Madison
Hockey: Metro Milwaukee Women’s Hockey
Hype it up: Hype Cheer and Dance
Gymnastics: M&M Gymnastics
Conferences: Follow NCAA Women’s Basketball
- Ask an area high school if your daughter and her friends can be there ball girls.
- Become the schools sport report and report the girls news for your schools newspaper or announcements.
- Sign your daughter up at the local recreation department.
College and High school
- Volunteer - be a score keeper/ usher a sports event.
- Become a manager for the team.
- Ask your friends to spread the word about your games.
- Give a sports clinic to elementary and/or middle schools, church groups, etc.
- Get together with your friends, have a pizza and watch women’s sporting events on television together.
- Attend other women’s sporting events with friends or with your team.
- Assist a trainer, coach or athletic director.
Professional
- Buy a season ticket or chip in with several people to buy one and share it throughout the season. Find game schedules and get ticket information in the "more" section below.
- If a retail store isn't carrying licensed merchandise for your favorite women's sports team, write to them to tell them you want to purchase this product or you can get on the teams website to purchase their merchandise…Go Team!
- When you go to a women's sports event, always take a friend. Introduce others to the excitement of women's sports. Help grow the fan base!
Grassroots
- Log on to www.iousports.org to find out how you can get involved in your local community by linking to our supportive sites that enrich the lives of girls and women.
- Volunteer your time and work with IOU Sports to organize sporting events.
- Start a Big Sister/Little Sister Athletic Club that pairs younger girls with older girls. Younger girls can practice with her big sister.
