IOU Sports 2012 NGWSD with Vera Jones

IOU Sports and NGWSD

For about half a day on Saturday February 11, 2012, girls and parents embarked at Alverno College and got the chance to learn hands on about Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball and Soccer.  It was all part of  IOU Sports observance of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Hosted by Alverno College Athletic Department, the 2012 NGWSD was a huge success.   The event Featured current collegiate players who spoke to the youth about everything from good sportsmanship, learning a new sport, to the importance of leadership. With the help from the Coaches, girls were able to see how team building leads to leadership.  These student athletes were excited to show how important education and sports can allow you to pursue your dreams.

Keynote speaker Vera Jones was a crowd pleaser.  Ms. Jones gave lesson her Play through the Foul workshop that touched upon communication skills, leadership, and overcoming adversity.  She's a motivational speaker, writer, award-winning television and radio broadcaster, and Syracuse University Hall-of-Fame athlete. She is most widely known for her extensive background in broadcasting, serving as a Women's Basketball Analyst and Reporter for various networks over the past two decades including ESPN, Fox Sports, Madison Square Garden Network, and NBA-TV. She currently spends the NCAA Women's Basketball season broadcasting for the Big Ten Network.
