KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Jan. 13, 2012) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer standout Sarah Hagen was taken in the first round of the 2012 Women's Professional Soccer Draft by the Philadelphia Independence.

Hagen was taken with the fifth pick of the draft, giving the Independence her playing rights in the United States for one year. Hagen signed a contract with Bayern Munich of the Frauen Bundesliga last month and joined the team this week. The German season ends in May, opening up the door for Hagen to return stateside and join Philadelphia for the second half of the WPS season.

"We just felt Hagen is equipped to play in this league immediately," Philadelphia head coach Paul Riley said on the WPS Draft webcast. "As long as we can steal her away from Bayern Munich for a few months, it will be great."

The four-time All-American led the nation in goals per game (1.238), points per game (2.90) and game-winning goals as a senior this season. Her 26 goals and 61 points in 2011 set school and league records for a single-season and were second in the country.

She finished her career with 93 goals, a figure which is ninth in NCAA Division I history, and 212 points--17th all-time.

Bayern Munich is currently in eighth place in the 12-team Bundesliga with a three wins and a draw in 11 matches at the mid-season break. The league is currently on its mid-season break and Munich returns to action Feb. 26 against SC Freiburg.

The Philadelphia Independence finished second in the WPS in 2011 with 11 wins and three draws for 36 points.
