Daddy’s Little Girl Scholarship Rosalind Ross Memorial Scholarship

In memory of A.C. Hooker, “Make it Happen” were the words he told his daughter, Bernell, before he died of cancer in 2003 regarding her love of sports and wanting to start a business on behalf of girls and women sports. A.C.’s passion for sports and his belief in education was passed onto Bernell through his example of a great work ethic, self determination, and spiritual faith. Such examples of a father’s love resulted in his daughter’s many accomplishments.

Because of his love and support, a father and daughter relationship can move mountains. His courage and strength made him a man who everyone respected. A.C. Hooker’s legacy will forever be etched through the implementation of this scholarship. This scholarship was created to help other men, like A.C., make a conscious effort to become involved in their “Little Girl’s” life in ways that support, nurture, and appreciate the girl’s presence in the world.

PURPOSE

To acknowledge and to celebrate the relationship that men have with girls and their dreams. Men are encouraged to nominate a girl whose life has been an inspirational, motivational, and empowering experience for him through her achievements in education, sports and community involvement.

It can be extremely difficult for LGBT victims to admit that domestic violence is an issue in their relationship. Even once they have admitted to themselves that there is a problem, they are often at a loss at where to turn to for help. They may be fearful of receiving a homophobic response from those they seek assistance from. Please don't give up in reaching out for help.

The Rosalind Ross Memorial Scholarship Fund is dedicated to the memory of Rosalind Ross who died tragically from a gunshot wound by her domestic partner on September 15, 2010. Domestic abuse occurs in approximately 30 to 40% of LGBT relationships, which is the same percentage of violence that occurs in straight relationships.

Roz was not ashamed of being a lesbian. She was a beautiful, bright, and unselfish young lady that loved life to the fullest and enjoyed giving of herself more than receiving. Roz was a loving individual with an adamant, core belief that she could make a positive difference in the lives of her friends, family, and community.

Roz was a former basketball player for Milwaukee Bradley Tech High School, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Oklahoma University and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Los Angeles Sparks. Roz will be missed, but her name will live on through her scholarship. She will always be remembered as a gift from the heavens with the ability to make those who knew her feel better about themselves.

PURPOSE

To award a scholarship to a Milwaukee Public High School senior and college bound student who best matches the aspirations and ideals demonstrated by Rosalind Ross.
